# Stop using the wrong Transformer for the Pool lighting!

A pool light transformer converts mains power to the low voltage that underwater lights run on. There are two kinds. An ordinary one reduces the voltage. A safety isolating one reduces the voltage and separates the two sides of the circuit, so a fault has no path back through the water. They look identical on a drawing. Only the second one is safe in a pool.

## Two drawings. Both correct. The pool is still unsafe.

The pool drawing shows where the lights go and says they run on 12 volts. The electrical drawing brings power to the plant room. In between sits a small box that turns mains into 12 volts. It usually arrives with the pool package, one line on a quotation.

Nobody asks which kind it is.

## The difference between the two

An ordinary step-down transformer is built to basic insulation standards, and its low-voltage side is usually earthed. So when something goes wrong anywhere in that circuit — a nicked cable, moisture in the niche, a corroded fitting after a few seasons — the current has a return path. In water, a swimmer can become part of it.

A safety isolating transformer is a different specification. Reinforced insulation between the two windings, certified for exactly this purpose, and a low-voltage side deliberately left unearthed. The same fault still happens. It just has nowhere to go.

This is what people miss. It isn't only protection against the transformer itself failing. It's protection against everything else in the circuit, most of which will be installed by someone you never met, and will then age for twenty years after handover.

## Why 12 volts is not automatically safe

Twelve volts is safe only if the supply it comes from is isolated. The number on the drawing is not the safeguard.

If the low voltage comes from a source that shares a path with the mains side, a fault upstream can push dangerous current onto a circuit everyone on site believes is harmless. The safety comes from the separation, not from the number.

Water changes the arithmetic too. Wet skin and full immersion collapse the resistance that protects a person on a dry floor. Currents small enough to be easy to miss become enough to stop a swimmer from swimming.

## Where the box should sit

A pool light transformer belongs in the dry plant room, not in a box beside the water.

Deck boxes, niches and chambers near the coping all get wet eventually, and a wet enclosure is the beginning of most of these stories. Keeping the unit dry and away from the pool is part of the safety, not a matter of convenience.

Two things worth deciding at the same time: one transformer per light rather than one shared across a run, and every metal part around the pool tied together so there is no voltage difference between them.

## Three questions, and when they are free

Same size box. Same symbol on a drawing. The difference is on the nameplate, and it takes ten seconds to check.

- Ask for the isolating type.
- Ask for the nameplate photo before it goes in.
- Ask for it in the dry plant room, not in a box beside the water.

All three are free to decide now. None of them are free once the deck is laid.

## What usually goes wrong

The failure modes are consistent:

- An ordinary transformer fitted where an isolating one was intended.
- The unit installed in a wet pit or deck box rather than the plant room.
- One transformer shared across every light in the pool.
- Earthing that was never properly tested.
- Cable and fittings that were fine at handover and are not fine six seasons later.

Reported incidents in India follow this list closely. Faulty wiring energising the water, and people who go in to help getting shocked themselves. Every element of that sequence was decided years earlier, on paper

## Questions people ask
